Read the passage, then answer the questions below
When the Marlow County Library opened a tool-lending room in 2019, some patrons were puzzled. Why would a library lend ladders, tile saws, and pressure washers? The answer lay in the county's own survey: nearly six in ten households reported buying a tool for a single project and never using it again. Librarians reasoned that a shared collection could save residents money and reduce clutter at the same time.
The first year was not smooth. Several items came back without their safety guards, and a borrowed carpet cleaner was returned with a cracked tank. Rather than closing the room, staff introduced a short orientation that every borrower must complete before checking out power equipment. Damage reports fell sharply the following year.
Today the collection holds more than four hundred items, and the waiting list for the tile saw is often longer than the list for the newest bestseller. Critics still argue that tools are not the business of a library. Supporters reply that a library has always existed to share things people could not easily own alone, and that books were simply the first of those things.
Reading
Which statement best expresses the main idea of the passage?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. The passage traces the tool room from a puzzling idea, through first-year damage, to a large and popular collection. The survey about single-use tools is only a supporting detail, so it is too narrow to be the main idea.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Key Ideas and Details
Reading
According to the passage, how did library staff respond when borrowed items came back damaged?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. The second paragraph states that, rather than closing the room, staff introduced a short orientation for anyone borrowing power equipment. Closing the room is the tempting choice, but the passage says staff specifically chose not to do that.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Key Ideas and Details
Reading
The author mentions the waiting list for the tile saw mainly to
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. Comparing the tile-saw waiting list with the list for a new bestseller emphasizes how popular the tools have become. The detail does not claim that people stopped reading; it uses the bestseller only as a point of comparison.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Craft and Structure
Reading
Which detail from the passage best supports the librarians' original reason for starting the program?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. The librarians reasoned that sharing tools would save residents money, and the survey shows that many households were paying for tools they barely used. The drop in damage reports supports the orientation, not the original reason for the program.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Read the passage, then answer the questions below
A honeybee colony cannot raise its young at just any temperature. The developing brood, packed into wax cells at the center of the hive, grows normally only when it is kept within a narrow range of roughly 32 to 36 degrees Celsius. Outside that range, adult bees may emerge with crumpled wings or poor memory, if they emerge at all.
Workers manage this range with surprising teamwork. On cold days, they press their bodies against the comb and shiver their flight muscles without moving their wings, turning the energy in stored honey into heat. Some workers even crawl into empty cells among the brood and warm them from inside, like living hot-water bottles.
Summer brings the opposite problem. Foragers carry water back to the hive and spread thin films of it over the comb, while rows of bees at the entrance beat their wings to pull air through the nest. As the water evaporates, it draws heat away, much as sweat cools a runner.
No single bee decides when to heat or cool. Each worker responds to the temperature around her, and the colony's climate emerges from thousands of small, local choices.
Reading
According to the passage, how do worker bees warm the brood on cold days?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. The second paragraph says workers press against the comb and shiver their flight muscles without moving their wings, turning stored energy into heat. Fanning and spreading water are the cooling methods described for summer, not warming methods.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Key Ideas and Details
Reading
The phrase "like living hot-water bottles" in the second paragraph is an example of which literary device?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. The phrase compares the bees to hot-water bottles using the word "like," which makes it a simile. It is not personification, because the bees are living creatures and are not being given human qualities they lack.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Craft and Structure
Reading
Which conclusion is best supported by the final paragraph of the passage?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. The final paragraph says no single bee decides and that the hive's climate comes from thousands of small, local choices. The option about the queen contradicts this, since it describes a single individual giving orders.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Reading
Based on the passage, what is a likely result if the brood is kept well below its normal temperature range?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. The first paragraph states that outside the 32 to 36 degree range, adults may emerge with crumpled wings or poor memory, if they emerge at all. Bringing water is a response to heat, so it would not follow from a temperature that is too low.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Key Ideas and Details

(1) The Harbor Line ferry leaves Pier 4 every 40 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. (2) A one-way adult ticket costs $3.50. (3) The crossing to the east shore takes about 25 minutes. (4) It is the most relaxing way to begin a workday in the city.
Which sentence in the ferry description expresses an opinion rather than a fact?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. Calling the ferry "the most relaxing way" to begin a workday is a personal judgment that cannot be proven. Sentence 3 gives an approximate time, but a travel time can still be checked, so it remains a factual statement.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Craft and Structure

Westbrook Community Pool – Weekly Schedule
Lap swim: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 6:00–8:00 a.m.
Open swim: every day, 1:00–5:00 p.m.
Swim lessons: Tuesday and Thursday, 4:00–6:00 p.m. (pool closed to other swimmers during lessons)
Note: The pool is closed all day on the first Monday of each month for cleaning.
A swimmer wants to swim laps before work on the first Monday of the month. Based on the schedule, what should she conclude?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. The note says the pool is closed all day on the first Monday, so the next lap swim session is Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. Open swim that afternoon is not possible either, because the closure lasts the entire day.Reference: TEAS 7 Reading: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Math
Solve for x: 4(x − 3) + 7 = 2x + 15
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. Distribute to get 4x − 12 + 7 = 2x + 15, so 4x − 5 = 2x + 15, then 2x = 20 and x = 10. The answer 5.5 comes from multiplying only the x by 4 and forgetting to distribute to the 3.Reference: OpenStax Elementary Algebra 2e, ch. 2
Math
A jacket priced at $80 is marked down 25%. At the register, an additional 10% is taken off the sale price. What is the final price?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. After the first discount the price is $80 × 0.75 = $60.00, and 10% off $60.00 leaves $60.00 × 0.90 = $54.00. The tempting $52.00 adds the discounts to 35%, but the second discount applies to the already reduced price.Reference: OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, ch. 6
Math
An oral antibiotic suspension contains 125 mg of drug in every 5 mL. A child is prescribed a 300 mg dose. How many milliliters should be given?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. Set up the proportion 125 mg / 5 mL = 300 mg / x mL, so x = 300 × 5 ÷ 125 = 12 mL. The value 2.4 comes from dividing 300 by 125 and forgetting to multiply by the 5 mL.Reference: OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, ch. 6
Math
Which list orders the numbers from least to greatest?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. As decimals, 4/7 is about 0.571, 58% is 0.58, 7/12 is about 0.583, and 0.59 is 0.59, which gives the order 4/7, 58%, 7/12, 0.59. The list that puts 7/12 before 58% is tempting, but 0.583 is slightly greater than 0.58.Reference: OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, ch. 5
Math
A phone plan costs $18 per month plus $0.05 for each text message. Rosa wants her monthly bill to be no more than $30. What is the greatest number of texts she can send?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. Solve 18 + 0.05t ≤ 30: subtracting 18 gives 0.05t ≤ 12, so t ≤ 240. The answer 600 divides the full $30 by $0.05 and ignores the $18 monthly fee.Reference: OpenStax Elementary Algebra 2e, ch. 2
Math
A child weighs 46 lb. Using 1 kg = 2.2 lb, what is the child's weight in kilograms, rounded to the nearest tenth?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. Because a kilogram is heavier than a pound, divide: 46 ÷ 2.2 = 20.909..., which rounds to 20.9 kg. The answer 101.2 kg comes from multiplying by 2.2, which converts in the wrong direction.Reference: TEAS 7 Math: Measurement and Data
Math
A rectangular garden measures 12 ft by 9 ft. A gravel path 3 ft wide surrounds the garden on all sides. What is the area of the path alone?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. The garden plus path measures (12 + 6) ft by (9 + 6) ft = 18 ft by 15 ft = 270 sq ft; subtracting the 108 sq ft garden leaves 162 sq ft. The answer 126 sq ft multiplies the garden's perimeter by 3 and leaves out the four 3 ft by 3 ft corner squares.Reference: OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, ch. 9
Math
A student records her hours of sleep for 7 nights: 6, 8, 5, 7, 9, 6, 10. Which statement about the data is true?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. In order the data are 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, so the median is 7 and the mode is 6, making the median greater. The mean is 51 ÷ 7, about 7.3, which is greater than the median, not less.Reference: OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, ch. 5
Math
A clinic gave 240 flu shots in September and 300 flu shots in October. What was the percent increase from September to October?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. The increase is 300 − 240 = 60, and 60 ÷ 240 = 0.25, or 25%. The tempting 20% divides the change by the October total instead of the original September value.Reference: OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, ch. 6
Science
A contrast dye is injected directly into the pulmonary veins. Which chamber of the heart will the dye enter first?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. The pulmonary veins return oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium, which then passes it to the left ventricle. The right atrium is tempting, but it receives blood from the venae cavae, not from the lungs.Reference: OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e, ch. 19
Science
A hiker is startled by a snake on the trail. Which response is caused by activation of the sympathetic nervous system?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. The sympathetic "fight or flight" response widens the bronchioles so more air reaches the lungs. Increased salivation and digestion are parasympathetic "rest and digest" effects, which are suppressed during a sympathetic response.Reference: OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e, ch. 15
Science
A patient has a condition that flattens the villi lining the small intestine. Which process is most directly impaired?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. Villi greatly increase the surface area of the small intestine, where most nutrients are absorbed into the blood and lymph. Water reabsorption in the colon is tempting, but the colon has no villi and that process occurs further along the tract.Reference: OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e, ch. 23
Science
Shortly after a meal rich in carbohydrates, which hormone rises in the blood, and what does it do?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. Rising blood glucose triggers pancreatic beta cells to release insulin, which moves glucose into cells and lowers blood sugar. Breaking down liver glycogen raises blood glucose, which is the action of glucagon, not insulin.Reference: OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e, ch. 17
Science
Which sequence correctly describes what happens during a normal, quiet inhalation?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. When the diaphragm contracts and flattens, the thoracic cavity enlarges, pressure in the lungs drops below atmospheric pressure, and air flows in. A relaxing diaphragm with falling volume and rising pressure describes exhalation instead.Reference: OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e, ch. 22
Science
In a species of beetle, a shiny shell (S) is dominant over a matte shell (s). A heterozygous shiny beetle is crossed with a matte beetle. What percentage of the offspring are expected to have matte shells?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. The cross Ss × ss produces Ss and ss in equal numbers, so half the offspring are expected to be matte. The 25% answer applies to a cross between two heterozygous parents (Ss × Ss), not to this cross.Reference: OpenStax Biology 2e, ch. 12
Science
Cells in the pancreas secrete large amounts of digestive enzymes, which are proteins. Which organelle would you expect these cells to have in unusual abundance?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. Rough endoplasmic reticulum is studded with ribosomes that make proteins destined for secretion, so protein-secreting cells have a great deal of it. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum lacks ribosomes and mainly makes lipids and detoxifies substances.Reference: OpenStax Biology 2e, ch. 4
Science
A diploid cell from an animal has 24 chromosomes. How many chromosomes will each cell have at the end of meiosis?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. Meiosis reduces the chromosome number by half, so each of the four haploid cells receives 12 chromosomes. The answer 24 describes the result of mitosis, which keeps the chromosome number the same.Reference: OpenStax Biology 2e, ch. 11
Science
Which equation correctly shows the balanced combustion of propane?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. With 5 O₂ there are 10 oxygen atoms on the left, matching 6 in 3 CO₂ plus 4 in 4 H₂O, and carbon (3) and hydrogen (8) also balance. Writing 8 H₂O is tempting because propane has 8 hydrogen atoms, but each water molecule already holds 2 of them.Reference: OpenStax Chemistry 2e, ch. 4
Science
Solution A has a pH of 3 and Solution B has a pH of 5. How does the hydrogen ion concentration of Solution A compare with that of Solution B?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. Each one-unit drop in pH means a tenfold increase in hydrogen ion concentration, so a difference of two units is 10 × 10 = 100 times greater. The answer "2 times greater" treats the pH scale as linear, but it is logarithmic.Reference: OpenStax Chemistry 2e, ch. 14
Science
A student grows duckweed in containers that receive 4, 8, or 12 hours of light per day. All containers hold the same volume of pond water, and after two weeks she counts the fronds in each one. What is the dependent variable?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. The dependent variable is what the student measures to see the effect, which is the number of fronds. Hours of light is the variable she changes on purpose, so it is the independent variable.Reference: OpenStax Biology 2e, ch. 1
Science
Thirty students with dry hands use a new hand cream for two weeks, and 24 report that their skin improved. The researchers conclude that the cream works. Which change would most strengthen this conclusion?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. Without a control group, the improvement could come from simply moisturizing or from the weather, so a group using the same base cream without the active ingredient isolates its effect. Rating the smell adds data, but it says nothing about whether the cream improves the skin.Reference: OpenStax Biology 2e, ch. 1
English and Language Usage
Which sentence is punctuated correctly?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. A colon correctly introduces a list after a complete independent clause, and commas separate the list items. The semicolon version is tempting, but a semicolon must join two independent clauses, and the list is not a clause.Reference: TEAS 7 English: Conventions of Standard English
English and Language Usage
Choose the verb that correctly completes the sentence: "Neither the coach nor the players ___ ready when the early bus arrived."
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. With "neither...nor," the verb agrees with the subject closest to it, which is the plural "players," and the past tense matches "arrived." "Was" is tempting because "coach" is singular, but it is not the nearer subject.Reference: TEAS 7 English: Conventions of Standard English
English and Language Usage
Which word is spelled correctly?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. The correct spelling is p-r-i-v-i-l-e-g-e, with no "d" and an "i" in the second syllable. "Priviledge" is the most common error because writers confuse the ending with words like "knowledge."Reference: TEAS 7 English: Conventions of Standard English
English and Language Usage
Which sentence is most appropriate for a formal email to an instructor asking for an extension?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. The correct sentence uses complete grammar, a specific request, and a respectful tone without slang. The "Hey, any chance" option is polite in intent, but its greeting, vague wording, and slang make it informal.Reference: TEAS 7 English: Knowledge of Language
English and Language Usage
Which choice best combines these sentences? "The trail was steep and muddy. The hikers reached the summit before noon."
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: A. "Although" shows the contrast between a difficult trail and an early arrival. "Because" is grammatical but wrongly claims that the steep, muddy trail caused the hikers to arrive early.Reference: TEAS 7 English: Knowledge of Language
English and Language Usage
Which sentence is the clearest and avoids a misplaced or dangling modifier?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. Turning the phrase into a clause with its own subject, "Dana," makes it clear who was walking. The option beginning "Walking to the parking lot, Dana's new coat" is tempting, but it still says the coat was walking.Reference: TEAS 7 English: Knowledge of Language
English and Language Usage
Read the sentence: "The volunteer's account of the flood was so lucid that even listeners who had never seen the river could picture every street that went under water." What does "lucid" most nearly mean?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: D. The clue is that listeners who had never seen the river could still picture every street, which means the account was easy to understand. "Emotional" could describe a flood story, but nothing in the sentence points to feelings rather than clarity.Reference: TEAS 7 English: Using Language and Vocabulary to Express Ideas in Writing
English and Language Usage
The prefix "hemi-" in the word "hemisphere" means
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. "Hemi-" comes from Greek and means half, so a hemisphere is half of a sphere. "Blood" is tempting because the similar-looking root "hem-" or "hemo-" means blood, as in "hemoglobin."Reference: TEAS 7 English: Using Language and Vocabulary to Express Ideas in Writing
English and Language Usage
A runner is told she has tendinitis in her ankle. Based on the suffix, what does the diagnosis describe?
Show answer & explanation
Correct answer: C. The suffix "-itis" means inflammation, so tendinitis is an inflamed tendon. Surgical removal would be shown by the suffix "-ectomy," not "-itis."Reference: TEAS 7 English: Using Language and Vocabulary to Express Ideas in Writing
