How Is the TEAS Scored? (2026 Guide)
Your TEAS total is the percentage of the 150 scored questions you answer correctly, equated across test versions and reported as the Adjusted Individual Total Score from 0% to 100%, with one of five ATI preparedness levels. There is no universal passing score: your school sets it.
1. Only 150 of the 170 questions count
Each section includes unscored pretest questions that ATI is trying out: 6 in Reading, 4 in Math, 6 in Science and 4 in English. They look exactly like the others, so treat every question as if it counts.
2. Section scores and the total are equated
ATI calculates the percentage of correct answers and then adjusts it for the difficulty of the form you received ("equating"). The total and the four section (content area) scores are equated; the sub-area scores are simple percentages and are not. This is why two people with the same number of right answers on different forms can get slightly different scores.
3. How much each section weighs
The total is built from the scored questions, so each section's weight follows its size: Science 44 of 150 (about 29%), Reading 39 (26%), Math 34 (23%), English 33 (22%). Some calculators online use made-up weights — check the numbers before you trust them.
4. No penalty for guessing, no partial credit
Wrong answers cost nothing extra, so answer everything: questions left blank when time runs out count as wrong. About 20% of questions are alternate types (multiple select, fill in the blank, ordered response, hot spot). Each one is all-or-nothing: on a select-all-that-apply question you must pick every correct option and none of the wrong ones.
5. Your score report
The individual performance profile shows your Adjusted Individual Total Score, your preparedness level, a score for each section and each sub-area, and comparisons with national and program averages. Use the sub-area scores to decide what to study next.
6. There is no passing score — your school decides
ATI says each school sets its own minimum, and most ask for Proficient or higher. Some also set minimums for single sections (often Reading or Science). See the published minimums of 44 programs and what each score range means.
7. Retakes and results
ATI sets no waiting period between attempts — your school decides how many it accepts — and online results are final after 4 business days. Details on TEAS retakes, results and cost.
